Pharr Bridge Trucks Get Twice the Room: Capacity Doubles
Pharr bridge trucks: the Pharr International Bridge doubled its capacity with a second structure and four new lanes. What it means for your crossings.

What happened
Pharr bridge trucks have more room now. The Pharr International Bridge in the Rio Grande Valley doubled its capacity with a second structure. The news came out of Pharr's first Gateway Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026.
The Rio Grande Valley Business Journal reported it on Oct. 8. The new structure adds four lanes. That is a 100% jump in bridge capacity.
Texas Border Business also covered the forum. Bridge director Luis Bazan called the new span a twin structure that adds 100% more capacity. He said the bridge handles more than $47 billion in trade.
The forum was held at the Pharr Development & Research Center. It was part of Fresh on the Border Week. The City of Pharr ran it with the bridge, the Pharr Economic Development Corporation and the Greater Pharr Chamber of Commerce.
What it means for owner-operators
Pharr is one of the busiest truck crossings in the Rio Grande Valley. More lanes should mean more room for loads between Reynosa and Hidalgo County. That matters for produce, manufacturing and every carrier who waits in that line.
But the main message at the forum was simple. A bigger bridge is only half the job. The roads and systems around it must keep up.
That is why one panel was about highways. It included CBP Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Texas Trucking Association president John D. Esparza and TxDOT Pharr District Engineer Pete Alvarez. Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority director Daniel Garcia and TxDOT Border Program Manager Sergio Vasquez also spoke.
Bazan also talked about faster processes, not only concrete. He named Unified Cargo Processing. That is a program where U.S. and Mexican customs review a load together, in one stop, instead of two.
The forum coverage did not give new wait times, lane hours or a date for every lane to run at full speed. So do not plan your day on a guess.
What to do next
- Check live wait times before you head to the bridge. CBP posts them at bwt.cbp.gov.
- Ask your customs broker which lanes and programs your load can use at Pharr.
- Keep your papers ready before you reach the booth. Missing papers slow you down, no matter how many lanes are open.
- Make sure your own file is in order. Your USDOT number, operating authority and other filings must be current to cross and get paid. Our filing guide for truckers walks you through each step.
We will share it when there is news on new hours or wait times at the Pharr bridge.
