Texas IFTA Renewal 2027: Keep Your License and Decals Coming
Texas IFTA renewal 2027: how automatic renewal works, what can block it and why your Q3 2026 return, due Nov. 2, matters.
Questions about how this applies to you? Talk to a licensed agent who ran his own authority.
Your IFTA license and decals are yearly credentials. For Texas-based carriers, the Texas Comptroller says that carriers who are eligible for renewal will automatically be issued a current year license and decals. The key word is "eligible." If your returns or taxes are not in order, your Texas IFTA renewal for 2027 could be held up. Here is how it works and what to do now.
What IFTA is, in plain words
IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement. It lets a carrier that drives in many states or Canadian provinces report fuel tax in one place, its home state. In Texas, that is the Comptroller of Public Accounts.
You get an IFTA license for your business and decals for each qualified truck. The Comptroller says two IFTA decals must be displayed on each qualified motor vehicle, one on each exterior side of the cab.
Every quarter you file a return. It shows the miles you drove and the fuel you bought in each state. The tax is then balanced between the states.
How Texas IFTA renewal works
According to the Texas Comptroller, Texas-based carriers that are eligible for renewal are automatically issued a current year license and decals. You do not have to start from zero every year, as long as you stay eligible.
The Comptroller also lists reasons it may deny a renewal. It may deny renewal if a carrier:
- Fails to file any IFTA return.
- Fails to pay IFTA tax owed to any member jurisdiction.
- Is behind on any tax or fee the Comptroller handles.
- Has not reported interstate travel in the past six quarters.
- Is an entity whose registration with the Texas Secretary of State was forfeited or cancelled.
So the best way to protect your 2027 renewal is to keep your quarterly returns and payments current.
The next return due: third quarter 2026
The Comptroller says IFTA returns are due on the last day of the month after the end of the calendar quarter. If that day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the next business day is the due date.
The third quarter covers July, August and September. The normal due date is October 31. In 2026, October 31 falls on a Saturday, so the due date moves to the next business day, Monday, November 2, 2026. Our article on the IFTA third quarter deadline has more detail.
Even if you had no miles in a quarter, check whether you still need to file. A missing return is one of the reasons a renewal can be denied.
How to get ready for your Texas IFTA renewal, step by step
- File every quarterly return on time, including Q3 2026.
- Pay any IFTA balance you owe.
- Check your other Comptroller accounts for past-due taxes or fees.
- Keep your business in good standing with the Texas Secretary of State if you are a company.
- Update your address so your new license and decals reach you.
- Put the new decals on each truck when they arrive, one on each side of the cab.
Keep your records ready
IFTA depends on good records. For each trip, keep your miles by state, and keep every fuel receipt. ELD data, trip sheets and fuel card reports all help. If the Comptroller ever audits you, these records back up your returns.
Mistakes to avoid
- Skipping a return because you had few miles.
- Losing fuel receipts. Without them, it is hard to prove the fuel you bought.
- Leaving an old tax balance unpaid.
- Moving without updating your address with the Comptroller.
- Not putting new decals on every qualified truck.

Common questions
Do I have to apply again for IFTA every year in Texas? The Comptroller says eligible Texas-based carriers are automatically issued a current year license and decals.
What can stop my IFTA renewal? Missing returns, unpaid IFTA tax, other past-due Comptroller taxes or fees, no interstate travel reported in the past six quarters, or a forfeited or cancelled business registration.
When is the third quarter 2026 IFTA return due? October 31, 2026 is a Saturday, so under the Comptroller's weekend rule it is due Monday, November 2, 2026.
