The IFTA third quarter 2026 due date is not October 31 this year. IFTA stands for International Fuel Tax Agreement, the system that lets a truck with a base-state license report and pay fuel tax for every state it drove through in one combined return, instead of filing separately in each state.

When is the IFTA third quarter 2026 due date

Quarter three covers fuel and mileage from July 1 through September 30, 2026. Normally the return is due October 31, one month after the quarter closes. But October 31, 2026, falls on a Saturday, and IFTA rules move the deadline to the next business day. That pushes the real due date to Monday, November 2, 2026.

This is not unusual. Every IFTA quarter follows the same one-month-after rule, and some years a deadline lands on a weekend or holiday and shifts a few days. The mistake carriers make is trusting a mental "the 31st" date instead of checking the actual calendar each quarter.

Why the IFTA deadline matters to your business

IFTA is not optional for most interstate carriers. If your truck has a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds (or three or more axles) and crosses state lines, you likely need an IFTA license and a quarterly return, even in a quarter where you drove very little. Filing late, or not filing at all, can bring penalties and interest on top of the tax owed, and a base state can suspend your IFTA license until you catch up. A suspended IFTA license can lead to citations in every member state, not just your home state, because other states check your status at the border and at scales. That single suspension can follow you into the next quarter too, since some states will not lift it until every outstanding return and payment is settled.

How to file your IFTA return step by step

  1. Pull your mileage and fuel purchase records for July, August, and September by state.
  2. Calculate the miles driven and fuel purchased in each state, and the tax rate that applies.
  3. Log in to your base state's IFTA portal, or use the paper form if your state still allows it.
  4. Enter the mileage and fuel data for the quarter and let the system calculate what you owe or what is refunded.
  5. Pay any balance due by the deadline, even if you file the return itself a few days earlier.
  6. Keep your mileage and fuel receipts for at least four years. States can request them during an audit.

Mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is estimating instead of using real trip records. States can audit your IFTA return and compare it against fuel receipts, toll records, and ELD (electronic logging device) data. A mismatch can trigger a full audit going back multiple quarters. Another mistake is forgetting that a quarter with zero interstate miles still needs a return, usually called a "zero return." Skipping it can still count as a missed filing. Finally, do not wait until the deadline week to gather receipts. A missing fuel ticket from three months ago is much harder to track down under a deadline.

Common questions

Do I still need to file IFTA if I did not cross state lines this quarter? In most cases yes, if you hold an active IFTA license, you still file a return, usually a zero return, even with no interstate miles.

What happens if I miss the IFTA third quarter 2026 due date? You can face penalties and interest, and your base state can suspend your IFTA license, which other states can enforce as well.

Can I file IFTA myself, or do I need a filing service? You can file directly through your base state's IFTA portal. Many owner-operators use a filing service to save the time and reduce math errors, especially when running multiple states each quarter.
