What happened
A San Antonio I-10 closure starts tonight. TxDOT (the Texas Department of Transportation) plans overnight closures at the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange on the Northwest Side of San Antonio. KTSA reported the plan on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026.
Here is what we know:
- When: Friday, Oct. 16, through Monday, Oct. 19.
- Hours: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, weather permitting.
- What closes: the frontage roads at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange, and the eastbound I-10 main lanes.
- What stays open: all flyover ramps.
- Trucks: large vehicles and trucks on eastbound I-10 will be sent on an alternate route through Loop 1604.
- Why: crews are building bridges at the interchange.
Drivers are asked to follow the posted detour signs and give themselves extra time.
What it means for owner-operators
I-10 is one of the main freight routes in the country. It links El Paso and West Texas with San Antonio, Houston and the Gulf Coast. Loop 1604 is the outer loop around San Antonio, and many trucks use it to reach I-35, US 281 and the warehouses on the north side.
If you run eastbound I-10 into San Antonio at night this weekend, expect to leave the main lanes. Your truck will be pushed onto Loop 1604 instead. A detour in the dark, with cones and lane shifts, is slower and easier to miss. That can cost you time on a tight delivery window.
Hours of service do not stop for a detour. If you plan to drive through between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., add time to your trip plan. Also think about where you will park if you run out of hours near the work zone.
The work depends on the weather. If it rains, nights can be moved, so the closures could shift.
What to do next
- Check your route before you leave. DriveTexas.org (TxDOT's road conditions map) shows current closures.
- Follow the truck detour signs on eastbound I-10. Do not try a shortcut on side streets that are not built for big trucks.
- Slow down in the work zone and watch for crews and sudden stops.
