What happened
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says part of a road in Rio Grande City will close for good. Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, through access on Fairgrounds Road at State Loop 195 (SL 195) will be permanently closed.
The reason is the new SL 195 divided highway. A divided highway keeps the two directions of traffic apart. To build it, TxDOT is making T-intersections where Fairgrounds Road meets SL 195, at both the northbound and southbound crossings. At a T-intersection, you can turn, but you can no longer drive straight across.
TxDOT gave two detours. If you are going north on Fairgrounds Road, turn left onto West Eisenhower Road and follow the detour. If you are going south on Fairgrounds Road, use south FM 3167 and follow the detour. TxDOT also warns that moving or removing construction barricades is illegal and unsafe.
What it means for owner-operators
If you drive, park or deliver around Rio Grande City in the Rio Grande Valley, this changes your route on Monday. The announcement does not say anything special about trucks, and it does not add a truck ban. But any driver who used to cut straight across here now has to detour.
Old habits and old GPS maps can lag behind a change like this. A wrong turn in a loaded rig costs time and fuel. A late delivery or a late border run can cost you money. Rio Grande City is a border town on the Rio Grande, so many drivers here run tight schedules.
This closure is part of the new SL 195 divided highway project. Road work like this is a good reminder to check the route before you roll, not after you get stuck.
What to do next
- Tell your drivers and your dispatcher before Monday. Share the two detours.
- Plan the new route now. Add a few extra minutes to your trips through Rio Grande City.
- Do not drive around barricades. Follow the detour signs.
- Check TxDOT's website for updates as work continues.
- If a detour makes you late, call the receiver early.
