What happened

Port Houston steel imports jumped in August. The port brought in 502,965 tons of imported steel. That is 54% more than in August 2025. FreightWaves shared the numbers on Sept. 30.

All steel at the port, in and out, reached 529,084 tons. That was up 49%.

Containers grew a little too. A TEU is one standard 20-foot container. The port handled 373,756 TEUs in August, up 1%. Loaded imports were 176,016 TEUs, up 4%. Loaded exports were 136,070 TEUs, down 2%.

There is a catch. For the whole year so far, steel imports are still down 11%. August was strong, but the year started slow.

Other cargo moved in both directions. General cargo, the big pieces that do not fit in a box, fell 26% in August. But it is up 22% for the year. Barge trips grew 10%.

What it means for owner-operators

Ships do not deliver steel to the job site. Trucks do. When more steel lands in Houston, more of it has to leave by truck or train.

Steel often rides on flatbeds. Heavy coils and beams may need special securement, and some loads need oversize or overweight permits. If you haul out of Houston, this is a sign of steady work near the docks.

More imports in boxes also means more container moves to warehouses around the Houston area. That keeps drayage and short-haul trucks busy.

But one good month is not a trend. Steel is still down for the year. Plan with care and do not bet the farm on one month.

  • If you pull flatbed, review your securement gear for coils and beams.
  • Check that your oversize and overweight permits are in order before you book heavy loads.
