What happened
A McAllen railroad crossing closure is coming this Sunday. The crossing on 10th Street (State Highway 336) at US Business 83 will close on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. It will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The closure is for safety upgrades at the crossing. Texas Border Business shared the news on Sept. 29 with a TxDOT map of the closure and the detours. The report does not say who is doing the work or exactly what will be upgraded.
There are two official detours.
Going north on 10th Street: turn right on Business 83. Take it to McColl Road (FM 2061). Turn left on Pecan Boulevard (State Highway 495). Then get back on 10th Street.
Going south on 10th Street: turn right on Pecan Boulevard (State Highway 495). Take it to 23rd Street (FM 1926). Turn left on Business 83. Then get back on 10th Street.
What it means for owner-operators
10th Street is one of the main north-south roads in McAllen. Business 83 is a busy east-west route through the Rio Grande Valley. Many local trucks use both to reach shops, warehouses and yards.
A closure of nine hours on a Sunday is short, but it can still ruin a tight schedule. The detours send traffic to McColl Road, 23rd Street and Pecan Boulevard. Those roads will carry more cars than usual. Expect slower turns and more waiting at lights.
If you have a Sunday pickup or delivery near 10th Street and Business 83, the detour may add time. A big rig also needs room to turn. Some corners on side streets are tight for a trailer, so stay on the official detour roads.
What to do next
- Check your Sunday loads. Is any pickup or drop near 10th Street and Business 83?
- Plan your route before you leave. Use the official detours, not neighborhood streets.
- Add extra time on Sunday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- If you think you will be late, call your customer or broker early.
- Follow the signs on site. Plans can change, so check TxDOT or DriveTexas.org before you go.
- A quiet weekend is also a good time to check your paperwork. Our owner-operator filing guide shows what your USDOT, MC, BOC-3 and UCR file needs.
