What happened

A Lubbock US 87 closure is coming next week. KCBD reported on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, that bridge work keeps moving on the US 87 project at FM 41 in Lubbock.

Here is the plan:

  • When: Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • FM 41 at US 87: closed to all traffic.
  • Southbound US 87: the inside lane will be closed.
  • Detour: eastbound and westbound FM 41 traffic will be sent around the work zone.
  • Reopening: FM 41 is expected to open again by 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.

Crews need the closure to place the deck (the driving surface) on the new bridge. It is part of a safety project at the interchange. The work depends on the weather, so the date could move.

What it means for owner-operators

US 87 is a main truck route through Lubbock and the South Plains. It links Lubbock with Interstate 27 to the north and with Lamesa, Big Spring and the Permian Basin oil field to the south.

If you cross FM 41 or run southbound US 87 that night, plan for a detour and a slower work zone. One lane closed at night means traffic can bunch up fast. Work zones also bring workers, cones and sudden stops.

This is a short closure, but a missed turn or a late delivery still costs you time. A wide or heavy load needs extra care, since detours are not always built for big trucks.

What to do next

  • Plan around Wednesday night, Oct. 21, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., if your route uses FM 41 or southbound US 87 in Lubbock.
  • Check DriveTexas.org (TxDOT's road conditions map) before you leave, since the date can change with the weather.
  • Slow down in the work zone and watch for crews and lane shifts.
  • Running oversize or overweight? Make sure your route still works for your load and your permit. Our Texas oversize and overweight permits guide explains the basics.
  • Passing through from out of state? See our guide to Texas trip and fuel permits.
