What happened

Laredo warrant forgiveness is happening today. The Laredo Municipal Court is holding a one-day program on Friday, Oct. 2, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The court is at 4610 Maher Avenue.

The deal is simple. If you have a warrant with the Municipal Court and you walk in during those hours, you will not be arrested. Local station KGNS reported the program this week.

It covers all Municipal Court warrants. That includes driving warrants and city ordinance warrants. An old traffic ticket you never took care of can turn into one of these.

Municipal Judge Jesus "Chuy" Dominguez asked people to come in good faith and with the goal of closing their cases. If they do, he said, no one is going to get arrested.

All the judges will work at the same time, in different courtrooms, so lines move faster. The court stayed open late so people can come after work. Community service and classes are also options. The judges decide those case by case.

The court is also planning another warrant forgiveness date later in October for cases that do not get solved today. The date was not announced yet.

What it means for owner-operators

A warrant is not just a city problem. If you drive for a living, an open warrant follows you down the road.

Any traffic stop or roadside inspection can turn into an arrest if there is an open warrant. That means a parked truck, a late load and an angry customer. One forgotten ticket from years ago can cost you a full week of work.

Many drivers stay away from court because they are afraid of being arrested there. Today that fear is off the table in Laredo. You can walk in, talk to a judge and start closing the case.

The program does not say your fines go away. What it promises is no arrest when you come in. You still need to deal with the case itself.

This program is only for the Laredo Municipal Court. Warrants from other cities or counties are not covered. But many Texas cities run programs like this from time to time. If you have old tickets somewhere else, ask that court.
