What happened

An I-45 lane closure near Galveston is coming this weekend, and truckers who run the Gulf Freeway should plan for it. TxDOT will close two southbound main lanes of I-45 near the Texas City Wye in Galveston County.

Here are the details, as reported by KHOU 11:

  • Where: I-45 southbound, between FM 519 and SH 6/SH 146, near the Texas City Wye.
  • Which lanes: two southbound main lanes.
  • Starts: 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.
  • Ends: 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12.

This work was first set for Saturday, Oct. 3. It was pushed back because of the weather.

Why close the lanes? Crews will move southbound traffic onto new pavement. They will also move concrete barriers, paint new lane lines and get the road ready for the next phase of the I-45 work in Galveston County. TxDOT says drivers should expect delays.

What it means for owner-operators

The Gulf Freeway is the main road between Houston and Galveston. It also serves Texas City, a busy area for refineries and industrial freight. Fewer open lanes on a busy weekend can mean slow traffic and long backups.

For an owner-operator, a backup is not just lost time. It can eat into your hours of service, push you late for an appointment and burn extra fuel. If you have a pickup or delivery in Texas City or Galveston on Saturday night, Sunday or early Monday, this closure can hit your schedule.

Work zones also change fast. Lanes shift, barriers move and new lines can be hard to see at night. That is when trucks need the most room and the most attention.

What to do next

  • Check your loads now. Look for any pickup or delivery south of FM 519 this weekend.
  • Talk to your broker or customer early. If your time window falls inside the closure, ask now if it can move.
  • Leave extra time. Plan for delays from Saturday night until Monday morning.
  • Slow down in the work zone. Watch for shifted lanes, new barriers and workers.
  • Check traffic before you roll. Look at the TxDOT and Houston TranStar traffic maps before you head south.
  • Keep your paperwork in order. A clean file helps you stay focused on the road. Our trucking filing guide explains the main filings in plain words.
