What happened
I-37 in Corpus Christi is getting new northbound lanes downtown. The Harbor Bridge Project said they are set to open on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026.
The Harbor Bridge Project is the big road job around the new bridge over the Corpus Christi ship channel. This step is on the downtown end of I-37.
Here is what the project notice says:
- New lanes: newly built and realigned northbound I-37 main lanes open Monday.
- Ramp is back: the exit ramp to northbound US 181 and southbound State Highway 286 (SH 286) is open again from those lanes.
- Short closure: northbound I-37 closes for a short time during the day between North Mesquite Street and Staples Street. Crews need that time to move traffic onto the new lanes.
- New turn lane: there is a new right-turn-only lane on northbound I-37 from North Mesquite Street to North Tancahua Street. A message sign will warn you.
- Weather: all of this depends on the weather.
Local station KIII-TV reported one more detail. Drivers leaving the Bayfront and the SEA District will have better access to northbound I-37 at North Tancahua Street.
Officials did not give an exact hour for the closure.
What it means for owner-operators
This is good news for anyone who drives downtown Corpus Christi. A ramp that was closed is back. That means fewer detours to reach US 181 toward Portland or SH 286 toward the south side.
But the road does not look the way it did last week. The lanes moved. There is a new right-turn-only lane. New layouts are where drivers make last-second lane changes, and that is dangerous next to a loaded truck.
Your GPS may not know the new layout for a few days. It may still send you on the old detour, or tell you to turn where you no longer can.
If the weather pushed the work back, you may still find the short closure on another day. Plan for both.
What to do next
- Slow down between North Mesquite Street and Staples Street. Read the message signs and follow the barriers.
- Pick your lane early. If you are not turning right, stay out of the new right-turn-only lane.
- Do not trust the GPS alone in this area this week. Follow the posted signs first.
- Check before you roll. The Harbor Bridge Project posts closures at harborbridgeproject.com. Its phone line is 1-877-227-4144. DriveTexas.org is the TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) road map.
