What happened
The I-30 closure in Dallas is set for this weekend. All lanes of I-30 will shut down in downtown Dallas, in both directions. That is eastbound and westbound.
The closed stretch runs between the I-35E interchange and the I-45 / US 75 interchange. It starts at 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 24. It ends at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 26. That is about 31 hours with no I-30 through downtown.
The detour for east-west traffic is State Highway 366, also called the Woodall Rodgers Freeway. FOX 4 reported the plan on October 22 and said drivers should expect significant delays.
The work is part of the I-30 Canyon project. TxDOT (the Texas Department of Transportation) is rebuilding this stretch of I-30 between I-35E and I-45. The project costs $888 million. The whole job is expected to be done in 2031.
What it means for owner-operators
I-30 is a main east-west route through Dallas-Fort Worth. If you run between Fort Worth and East Texas, or toward Texarkana, this closure can hit your trip.
The detour on Woodall Rodgers will carry much more traffic than normal. Slow traffic burns fuel and hours. A load that should take 20 minutes across downtown could take much longer.
Time matters for your logbook too. Your hours of service clock keeps running while you sit in traffic. A late pickup or delivery can push you close to your limit.
The Canyon work also closes some downtown streets for a long time. For example, Cesar Chavez Boulevard is closed through late 2028, and Akard Street through summer 2028. If you deliver in downtown Dallas, your usual way in may not be open.
What to do next
- Plan around the window. If you can, cross downtown Dallas before 10 p.m. Saturday or after 5 a.m. Monday.
- Check DriveTexas.org. TxDOT posts closures there. Look before you leave, not on the road.
- Talk to your shipper or receiver. Tell them early if your appointment falls inside the closure.
- Watch your hours. Build extra time into your trip so delays do not push you over. Review the ELD and hours of service basics if you need a refresher.
- Running oversize or overweight? Your permit lists your route. Check it before you change roads. Our guide to Texas oversize and overweight permits explains how it works.
- Slow down in the work zone. Keep your eyes up and your phone down.
