What happened
The I-2 Dixieland Road exit in Harlingen will close for part of the day on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026. Texas Border Business published the traffic alert on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Here is what the alert says:
- Which exit: the Dixieland Road exit ramp, number 175, on eastbound I-2 at the Harlingen interchange.
- When: Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Why: crews will repair a crash cushion.
- What to do: drivers are asked to plan ahead and find another route.
A crash cushion is the safety device at the point where an exit ramp splits from the main lanes. It is built to soak up the hit if a vehicle runs into that point.
The alert only names the eastbound exit ramp. It does not say the main lanes of I-2 will close. It also does not list a detour.
What it means for owner-operators
This is a short closure: five hours on one ramp. But it lands in the middle of the workday, when local deliveries are moving.
I-2 is the main freeway of the Rio Grande Valley. If your stop is off Dixieland Road in Harlingen, your usual exit will not be there on Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
A missed exit costs more in a truck than in a car. You cannot always turn around at the next corner. A wrong turn onto a small street can mean low wires, tight turns or a street where trucks are not allowed.
Crews will also be working right beside live traffic. Expect cones, work trucks and slow traffic near the ramp.
What to do next
- Pick your other route before you roll. Do not wait until you see the closed ramp.
- Move the stop if you can. Before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. the ramp should be open.
- Tell your shipper or receiver if a Harlingen delivery may run a few minutes late.
- Slow down near the ramp. Workers will be a few feet from traffic.

- Check DriveTexas.org before you leave. It is the road conditions map from TxDOT (the Texas Department of Transportation).
- Keep your paperwork in the truck. Here is the list of papers to carry in your truck.
