What happened

An I-10 El Paso closure is coming this weekend. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will fully close I-10 eastbound between Anthony and Transmountain.

The closure starts Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3 a.m. It ends Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 a.m. That is 51 hours with no eastbound traffic on the main lanes in that stretch.

Why? Crews will be setting deck placement. That is bridge deck work, part of TxDOT's I-10 Widening West project on the west side of El Paso.

The detour uses the frontage road. Eastbound traffic stays on South Desert and goes through the intersection at Anthony and Vinton. Then it gets back on I-10 eastbound after Los Mochis.

This is on top of work that already runs day and night in the project area:

  • The U-turn underpass at Bridge C is fully closed. North Desert traffic is sent to Anthony and South Desert traffic to Vinton to turn around.
  • The left lane is closed on parts of South Desert, including Valley Chile to Vinton Steel, Vinton to Logwood, and Transmountain to Isela Rubalcava.
  • Left lanes are closed on North and South Desert at the Los Mochis intersection.

What it means for owner-operators

I-10 is the main truck road between New Mexico and El Paso. If you run eastbound from Las Cruces toward El Paso, Van Horn or San Antonio, this weekend hits you.

A frontage road detour means traffic lights, turns and slower speeds. With lanes already narrowed on South Desert, expect a long, tight line, most of all at the Anthony and Vinton intersection.

That can cost you time on a tight delivery window. It can also eat into your hours of service.

Westbound I-10 is not part of this full closure. But the project still has lane closures on both sides, so plan for delays either way.

What to do next

  • If you can, cross this stretch before 3 a.m. Saturday or after 6 a.m. Monday.
  • If not, add extra time to your trip plan and tell your broker or receiver early.
  • Follow the South Desert detour signs. Do not trust your GPS alone this weekend.
  • Watch for tight turns at Anthony and Vinton, and give crews room.
  • Check DriveTexas.org or TxDOT El Paso before you leave, since work dates can change with weather.
  • Keep your paperwork as ready as your route. New carriers can use our new entrant safety audit guide to get ready for FMCSA.
