What happened
The I-10 closure near Seguin is on right now. Both directions of the I-10 main lanes are shut between FM 464 and SH 46, just east of Seguin, Texas.
The closure started Friday, Oct. 9, at 9 p.m. It ends Monday, Oct. 12, at 5 a.m. The City of Seguin gave the dates, and the San Antonio Express-News reported them on Oct. 9.
This is the main road between San Antonio and Houston. So it touches a lot of freight.
Here is the detour:
- Westbound (toward San Antonio): exit at FM 464. Stay on the westbound frontage road. Then take the entrance ramp back onto I-10.
- Eastbound (toward Houston): exit at FM 464 and turn right. Follow FM 464 to U.S. 90. Turn left on U.S. 90 and go to SH 46. Turn left on SH 46 to the eastbound I-10 frontage road. Turn right and take the ramp back onto I-10.
City officials said to expect delays and to be careful in the work zone.
The work is part of a big TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) project. The contractor is widening I-10 from four lanes to six between FM 464 and SH 130. The job costs $245.2 million. It should be done in fall 2029.
What it means for owner-operators
A full closure is not like a lane closure. Every truck has to leave the interstate. The eastbound detour puts you on two-lane roads and through several turns. That is slow with a 53-foot trailer.
Time is money. If you run San Antonio to Houston this weekend, the delay comes out of your hours of service (the daily driving limit set by federal rules). A late pickup or delivery can also cost you the next load.
The project runs until 2029. So more weekend closures on this part of I-10 are likely. It pays to check before every trip.
What to do next
- Add time to any trip through Seguin before Monday at 5 a.m.
- Tell your broker or dispatcher now if your appointment is tight. Do it before you are stuck in the line.
- Follow the posted detour. GPS shortcuts can send a big truck down a road that is not built for it.
- Hauling oversize or overweight? Your permit lists your exact route. Ask the office that issued it before you take a detour.
- Check DriveTexas.org before you roll. It is the TxDOT road conditions map.
- Keep your paperwork in order. A work zone means more patrols. Our trucking permits filing guide shows what you need in the truck.
