What happened

Houston weekend closures will hit three busy freeways starting tonight. Houston TranStar, the area's official traffic center, lists the work on its construction page. Local station KHOU also warned drivers today.

The biggest one is on SH 249, also called Tomball Parkway. All southbound main lanes at Louetta are closed. The closure runs nonstop from 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.

Southbound traffic must exit at Chasewood Park Drive / Cypresswood Drive. From there you follow the detour on the frontage road. You get back on the main lanes at the next open on-ramp. The frontage road stays open the whole time.

On I-69 Southwest Freeway, the five inside northbound lanes close from South Rice to the Westpark Tollway / Westpark Drive. That runs from 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, to 5 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

On I-45 in Galveston County, two southbound lanes close in turns. The work zone goes from FM 519 / Main to SH 6 / SH 146 in La Marque. It runs from 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.

What it means for owner-operators

If you run loads in the Houston area this weekend, these closures can eat your clock. A full closure like the one on SH 249 pushes every truck onto the frontage road. Frontage roads have traffic lights, turning cars and tight corners.

That means slower miles and more stop-and-go. Under hours-of-service rules, time stuck in traffic still counts as driving time. A late delivery can cost you a fee or a lost customer.

The I-69 closure leaves fewer lanes open on Saturday night, so expect backups near the Westpark area. On I-45 toward Galveston, the lane closures last two nights, so traffic toward the coast can slow down.

Work zones are also risky. Lanes get narrow, drivers merge late and cars cut in front of trucks. A crash or a ticket there can cost you far more than the extra time.

What to do next

  • Check Houston TranStar before you leave. Closures can change or run late.
  • If you go south on SH 249, plan the Chasewood Park / Cypresswood exit, or pick another route.
  • Avoid northbound I-69 near Westpark on Saturday night if you can.
  • Add extra time for I-45 south toward La Marque and Galveston.
  • Slow down in work zones, leave space and watch for late merges.
  • Tell your broker or customer early if a closure will make you late.
  • Keep your USDOT number, permits and filings up to date so a stop in a work zone stays short. See our filing guide for owner-operators.
