What happened

A Grand Parkway I-45 widening plan is now open for public comment. TxDOT, the Texas Department of Transportation, wants to widen State Highway 99 (the Grand Parkway) in the Spring area north of Houston.

The stretch runs about 6.7 miles. It goes from west of Springwoods Village Parkway to east of Townsen Boulevard and Imperial Promenade, in Harris and Montgomery counties.

Here is what TxDOT is proposing:

  • One new main lane in each direction, built in the existing median.
  • That makes three main lanes each way on this part of the Grand Parkway.
  • A new direct connector from southbound I-45 to eastbound SH 99.
  • A new direct connector from westbound SH 99 to northbound I-45.

A direct connector is a ramp, usually a flyover, that takes you from one highway to the other without stopping at a light on the frontage road.

TxDOT says the work would stay inside land it already owns. No homes or businesses would have to move.

The virtual public meeting went online on Sept. 22. An in-person open house is set for Thursday, Sept. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at York Junior High School in Spring. Comments are due Friday, Oct. 9, 2026.

What it means for owner-operators

The Grand Parkway and I-45 meet in one of the busiest freight areas around Houston. Trucks run this way to reach The Woodlands, Conroe, Dallas and the north side warehouses. Today, some moves between the two highways send you through the frontage roads and traffic lights.

The two new connectors would fix two of those moves. Coming south on I-45, you could go straight onto the Grand Parkway heading east. Coming west on the Grand Parkway, you could go straight onto I-45 heading north. Fewer lights means less stop-and-go, less brake wear and fewer chances for a crash at an intersection.

This is still a proposal. TxDOT has not posted a construction start date on the meeting page. When work does start, expect lane shifts and work zones on this stretch for a while.

This is a Houston story, but the lesson works anywhere in the US. Big road projects near you often open a comment period first. That is your chance to tell the state how trucks really use a road.

What to do next

  • If you run SH 99 or I-45 in Spring, look at the plan on TxDOT's project meeting page.
  • Send your comment by Oct. 9. You can mail it to TxDOT Houston District, P.O. Box 1386, Houston, TX 77251-1386, or give it at the open house. Tell them where trucks get stuck today.
  • Questions? The TxDOT Houston District number is 713-802-5000.
  • Keep checking DriveTexas.org once work begins so closures do not catch you by surprise.
  • Keep your paperwork as ready as your route. New carriers can use our new entrant safety audit guide to get ready.
