What happened

FM 1924 road work in McAllen and Mission has started, and it happens at night. FM 1924 is the road most people call 3 Mile Road or Buddy Owens Boulevard.

Crews are milling and paving the road. Milling means grinding off the old top layer of asphalt. Paving means laying the new one.

The work zone runs between FM 494 (Shary Road) in Mission and FM 1926 (23rd Street) in McAllen. Texas Border Business published the notice on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026.

Here is what the notice says:

  • Hours: crews work from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Lanes: expect eastbound and westbound lane closures inside the project limits while crews are working.
  • How long: the work has begun and will continue through the end of the year.
  • Weather: all work depends on the weather, so a rainy night can move the schedule.

The notice does not list detours, and it does not say the road will close completely.

What it means for owner-operators

This is a lane closure, not a full closure. But it lasts for months, and it is at night. Many trucks in the Rio Grande Valley move at night to beat the heat and the traffic.

If you cross Mission or McAllen on 3 Mile Road after 8 p.m., you may be squeezed into fewer lanes. A night work zone has bright lights, cones, slow equipment and workers on foot. Fresh milled pavement is rough and can be loose.

A few minutes each night add up. If you run the same local route for a shipper or a warehouse in the Valley, plan for it now. The work goes on through December.

What to do next

  • Add a few minutes to any night trip on FM 1924 between Shary Road and 23rd Street.
  • Slow down in the work zone. Workers are on foot a few feet from your lane.
  • Watch for uneven lanes and loose material where the old asphalt has been removed.
  • Hauling oversize or overweight? Your permit lists your exact route. Read our Texas oversize and overweight permits guide before you change it.
  • Check DriveTexas.org before you roll. It is the TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) road conditions map.
  • Keep your paperwork in the truck. Here is the list of papers to carry in your truck.
