What happened
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close part of Business Texas Highway 35 for five days. TxDOT's Corpus Christi District says the closure starts Monday, September 21, 2026. It runs until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 25, weather permitting.
The closed stretch is between West Pryor Avenue in Aransas Pass and State Highway 188 (SH 188) in Rockport. The reason is work on railroad crossings. Crews will do repairs and improvements at two crossings owned by Rockport Terminals.
TxDOT gave a detour for each direction:
- Going north (Aransas Pass to Rockport): take Wheeler Avenue to FM 1069, then north on SH 35.
- Going south (Rockport to Aransas Pass): take SH 188 to SH 35.
TxDOT also asks drivers to plan for extra travel time, slow down and obey the traffic signs and signals.
What it means for owner-operators
If you haul, pick up or deliver between Aransas Pass and Rockport, your route changes on Monday. The notice does not say anything special about trucks. It does not add a truck ban. But every driver on this stretch has to use the detours for five days.
A detour in a loaded rig costs time and fuel. A late delivery can cost you money. Old GPS maps can also lag behind a closure like this one.
TxDOT says the closure depends on the weather. That means the dates could move, so plan for that too. The notice also does not say if the detours fit long trailers or heavy loads. Check the route before you roll, not after you get stuck.
What to do next
- Tell your drivers and your dispatcher before Monday. Share both detours.
- Add extra minutes to any trip between Aransas Pass and Rockport.
- Follow the detour signs. Never drive around barricades.
- Call the receiver early if a detour will make you late.
- Check TxDOT's website for updates during the week.
