You may have heard that FMCSA stopped punishing carriers who miss the MCS-150 biennial update. That is partly true, but it is easy to get wrong. The pause is real. It is also temporary. Here is what happened, in plain words, and what you should do about it.

What the MCS-150 biennial update is

The MCS-150 is the form that keeps your USDOT information current. It tells FMCSA who you are and what your operation looks like. FMCSA is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency that oversees trucking safety. Every two years, carriers have to update that information. That is why it is called the biennial update. In the past, missing the update could get your USDOT number inactivated. Without an active USDOT number, you cannot legally run.

MCS-150 biennial update 2026: what changed

In May 2026, FMCSA launched a new registration system called Motus. According to Land Line, there were service disruptions during the switch. Because of those problems, FMCSA paused enforcement of the biennial update requirement. That includes inactivating USDOT numbers for carriers who do not comply.

The pause covers registrants whose biennial update was due on or after June 1, 2026. FMCSA said the pause stays in effect until further notice.

Why the pause is not permanent

Here is the part that matters most. FMCSA has said it will give "ample warning" before it starts enforcing the requirement again. That means the rule did not go away. It means FMCSA is waiting for its system to settle. When it decides the system is ready, enforcement can come back, and you may not have a long time to catch up.

Think of it like a school that pauses late penalties because the online portal is down. When the portal works again, the penalties come back. You do not want to be the one who waited.

What to do now

You do not have to guess. Here is a simple plan:

  • Find out when your update is due. Check your USDOT record in the FMCSA system.
  • Check your information. Look at your company name, address, phone number and email. Look at your number of trucks and drivers, and what you haul.
  • Update anything that changed. If you added trucks, moved or changed your operation, do not wait for the deadline.
  • Save proof. Keep a copy of every filing and confirmation.
  • Keep an eye on FMCSA news. When FMCSA announces the end of the pause, you will want to know right away.

Correct information also helps you in other ways. Brokers, insurers and auditors may look at your record. Old or wrong data can cause questions you do not need.

What about intrastate carriers?

If you run only inside Texas, pay attention. Land Line reports that Motus no longer offers a biennial update option for intrastate carriers. FMCSA says it is working to show each carrier's most recent update date so states can check compliance with their own recurring update rules. In plain words: your state may have its own rules about updates. Ask your state agency what applies to you.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking the requirement is gone. It is paused, not removed.
  • Waiting for a warning. Warning is promised, but time may be short.
  • Ignoring your USDOT record. Wrong information can hurt you at an audit or when a broker checks you.
  • Using a look-alike website. File only through official FMCSA channels.

Common questions

Do I still need to file the MCS-150 update? The requirement has not been removed. FMCSA paused enforcement for updates due on or after June 1, 2026, until further notice. It is smart to keep your information current anyway.

Will FMCSA warn me before it starts enforcing again? FMCSA said it will give ample warning before enforcement returns. Because you do not know how much time that means, do not count on a long grace period.

Does the pause change anything for intrastate carriers? Motus does not offer a federal biennial update option for intrastate carriers. Your state may have its own update rules, so check with your state.
